Pat Marvell - Glass
About me: As a teenager I attended Saturday classes at Hornsey Art School and dearly wanted to study art full time. Sadly life events intervened and I compromised by training as a teacher with art as my main subject. After a full career in education and public sector consultancy I decided to return to college and follow my dream. I took three diploma courses in glass casting at Westminster, then set up my own studio at home in Finchley. I now keep up tp date and extend my skills by attending masterclasses in different aspects of glass.
About my work: Inspiration can come from anywhere, but more often than not it is the fluidity and colour I see in nature that forms the starting point for my thinking. I very much enjoy experimenting with process, pushing the boundaries of what I have previously achieved by asking myself ‘what if...?’ As a result I use a variety of materials to create original forms, including ice, clay, wax, fabric and natural materials, and play with firing processes to crate different results. I am currently learning the basics of glass engraving with Katharine Coleman, and enjoying incorporating this with my fused and cast work.
